Tocumwal’s Christmas Tree of Remembrance has been set up in the Tocumwal Library to pay respects to loved ones that have died in 2020.
It is a Tocumwal Local Health Advisory Committee initiative to recognise the hardship of the pandemic and initiated recognition of mental health and support.
The tree recognises that community members will be thinking of the loss of a person not with them at Christmas and that each individual has not been able to receive the usual hugs and support in the past year.
LHAC invites residents to place a Christmas Remembrance tag onto the tree with a message as recognition and inclusion of Christmas and the Tocumwal community.
The remembrance tag can be of individual loss of a loved one or the loss of a person to whom you did not get to say goodbye.
The tag can also be a way of showing support for families who have grieved and that the Tocumwal community cares, supports and embraces them.
LHAC chair Ruth Silvester said as the warm weather approaches it brings the excitement of seeing people and enjoying life.
She said the Christmas decorations begin to appear in the shops and we get the box from storage and give it a dust off ready to decorate the house or to have a little something that resembles joy, love and celebration.
‘‘However, when you acknowledge Christmas or the season of summer and holidays our minds turn towards the people that surround us; the people we will be shopping for, the people we only see at this time of year and the people who welcome and embrace us.’’
She said Christmas is also a time for reflection, looking back at the life changing year already gone.
‘‘We think about the people with us and the people who aren’t, those we miss and we have also missed saying goodbye to, the people we have lost as a family, friend, neighbour and community member.
‘‘We think about those people who we have not been able to commemorate and be present in the support that families and individuals have come to know as a gathering in a combined sorrow and sympathy due to the price of containing a highly active virus.
‘‘So I invite all to participate in this great idea.’’
