We’ve seen some exciting pieces of glass from Canon since the RF mount was first launched – and it seems that Canon are continuing to push optical boundaries with their latest lens patents. These recently uncovered documents show that we could be seeing three potential lenses from the imaging giant, including a Canon RF 35-135mm f/2.8, a Canon RF 40-150mm f/2.8 and a Canon RF 30-110mm f/2.8.
However, while these three lenses certainly look interesting, it’s not likely that we’ll see all (or any!) of them come to market. There are two main reasons for this, with the first being that Canon is known for pumping out a steady stream of intriguing patents that never see the light of day.

However, even if one of these lenses makes it to market, these three optical designs are pretty similar. We’d be pretty surprised if Canon decided to manufacture all three, considering they’d likely just end up undercutting each other and splitting the market.
Filing three patents (uncovered by rumor website Canon News) was likely a way for Canon to experiment with some uncommon focal length ranges and figure out which one would be most suitable for Canon RF photographers.
If we had to put our money on one particular lens, we’d probably choose the Canon RF 35-135mm f/2.8. Covering the short standard focal length of 35mm to the portrait telephoto focal length of 135mm, this would be a seriously interesting lens for portrait photographers looking to cull their kitbag and carry just one piece of glass.
However, as stated earlier, there’s no guarantee that any of these Canon RF lenses will see the light. We’ll simply have to wait and see whether there’s any further news in the new year…
