TEIFI Valley writer Jackie Biggs will be special guest at an international online event to feature work from her latest book of poetry, which is inspired by the nature and wildlife of Cardigan Bay.
Her third collection, Before we Breathe, will be highlighted at the Pilsnerpoesi/P&P event, hosted jointly on Zoom by Carmarthenshire based community arts company Write4Word and Litteraturcentrum in Sweden.
It kicks off at 6pm (UK time) on Monday, May 3. Open mic spots are also available at this gathering.
The poems are inspired by the beaches and coastline of west Wales and Jackie’s love of sea swimming, plus among other things, dolphins, jellyfish, caves and cliffs, and ancient stories and legends of the region, including tales from Cantre’r Gwaelod and the Witches Cauldron.
Praise for the book has been coming in since the book was released early in April by Littoral Press. Reader comments include:
“The poems are so evocative, taking me back into that world of sea, sky and sand, reminding me of the taste of salt on my skin and that freedom of swimming.”
“Very imaginative and an adroit use of language. From the shellshocked soldier returning from the trenches to the delicious coffee and cookie after a beach walk, to the handful of pebbles that tell the story of the earth – a variation of tone and mood… A tonic for these times.”
“I keep going back to it and finding more in it.”
“A beautiful collection. An often magical encounter with the sea and all who inhabit her.”
“I’ve read it twice now, and found it really gripped me.”
Before we Breathe is published by Littoral Press. Copies are available direct from the author by mail order, priced at £10 including postage. Book orders and requests for the free Zoom link for the May 3 event should be emailed to: email@example.com
