IKEA has announced a new buy-back scheme allowing shoppers to trade in unwanted furniture for gift-cards.

IKEA has launched its long-awaited furniture buy-back and re-sale scheme that will see shoppers rewarded with vouchers to spend in store as part of their plans to reduce the number of products going to landfill.

The move is part of the retail giant’s drive to become “climate positive” by 2030.

Shoppers will receive vouchers to spend in-store if items they no longer need are returned in good condition.

The brought back furniture will be made available for other customers to purchase, with products described “as new” and without scratches will be eligible for a voucher worth 50% of its original price, dropping to 40% for items classed ‘very good’ or 30% for ‘well-used’.

To sell old furniture, shoppers will need to fill out a form on the new Ikea Buy Back page on its website.

Customers will be able to pick up used items from the buy-back scheme in a separate part of the store, called a Circular Hub, and items will include dressers, cabinets, bookcases and shelving units.

The scheme is currently available in Scotland, with plans to roll out to other locations in the UK and Ireland on November 27.

Retail and Sustainability UK and Ireland manager Peter Jelkeby, said: “Sustainability is the defining issue of our time and IKEA is committed to being part of the solution to promote sustainable consumption and combat climate change.

“With the launch of Buy Back we are giving a second life to many more IKEA products and creating more easy and affordable solutions to help people live more sustainably.

“It is an exciting step forward in our journey towards becoming a fully circular and climate positive business by 2030.”
